My Random 7-Days Stay In Kutaisi Georgia – Country #103

In this article, I share my accidental visit to Kutaisi, Georgia. As a result, I was able to visit my country #103 despite having no plans whatsoever to go to Georgia during my second one-year trip around the world. Regardless, I welcome this interesting turn of events as visiting a new country is in line with my goals.

Flying from Wroclaw to Kutaisi

I never had any plans to visit Georgia during my second one-year trip around the world. However, when I was in Poland, the immigration officer in Warsaw said I couldn’t stay passed 30 days and I had already booked 60 days in the country. I knew the Warsaw immigration officer was wrong but I didn’t want to get in trouble. So I booked a flight to the cheapest direct destination from Wroclaw and that’s Kutaisi in Georgia. While in the airport, I received good news that the Warsaw officer was wrong and that I can return back after 5 days.

After flying to Kutaisi, the first thing I noticed was how grumpy the immigration officers were. Regardless, I got through the line quickly.

I bought a sim card and found a taxi shortly after that would take me to my hostel.

Staying in a hostel in Kutaisi for two nights

The weather in Kutaisi was terrible as it rained hard for the most part for the first two days. It was also rather cold here as I went during November.

The food near the hostel was also pretty bad tasting and unhealthy but I needed to eat something.

People in the hostel were pretty friendly at least. I conversed with this Russian lady with really bad English through Google translate. Also, I befriended this rather opinionated Dutch woman who ended up exploring the town with me two days later.

I spent most of my time sleeping in the hostel was I flew out of Poland at 3am and I was dead exhausted and jetlagged. Suprisingly, the hostel bunks were pretty comfortable and I’m always a big fan of curtains.

Moving on to a hotel

After two days of staying in a hostel, I moved on to a hotel. Funny enough, I was the only person staying there. The receptionist even gave me a key to lock up the hotel when I leave to explore.

My first room had a bug infestation so I had to ask them to move me to a different room on the second day. That bug infestation returned on my last night in that accommodation. I guess it can’t be helped.

Eating the best Shwarma ever

After checking in the hotel, I met up with the Dutch woman from the hostel at the bazaar. This lady is friendly but also opinionated and very cheap. She told me she would literally spend 1-hour looking for the best deal. The best deal is saving 50 cents. It’s so ridiculous. She told me she made good money in The Netherlands but can’t stand the principle of overpaying for something. I’d honestly don’t give a shit over 50 cents. I can’t stand the extreme budget travel mindset.

Regardless, we did find this eatery place just outside the bazaar. And to my surprise, they had the best shwarma I have ever eaten in my life!

The shwarma also went amazingly well with black tea. I love finding amazing meals like this!

The next several days, I’d eat here literally everyday and even trying some of their sandwiches. Unfortunately, they’re not as good as the shwarma.

I also tried McDonald’s and Wendy’s in Kutaisi. McDonald’s was awful but Wendy’s was pretty good.

Flying back to Wroclaw, Poland

Before long, it was time to fly back to Poland and off I went to the airport. The hotel provided the airport transfer for a fee.

The airport wait was horrendous. Despite being an international flight, the check-in counter didn’t open until 2-hours before the flight departed. There are also no directions to where the check-in counter is. People working in the airport were mostly grumpy and many didn’t speak English.

After finally getting my boarding pass and getting through security, I was hungry and bought some overpriced wrap.

It tasted pretty meh. But I suppose food is food at this point. Before long, I boarded my Wizz Air flight back to Wroclaw, Poland.

Conclusion

Kutaisi, Georgia is an interesting destination. I went there by accident but I learned that when the weather is nicer, there’s quite a bit of adventurous things you can do here. I can see myself returning to Georgia in the distant future. However if I do that, I would go to the capital of Tbilisi as opposed to Kutaisi. Just so I can see a different place. People are quite savage in Kutaisi as shoving was common practice. But once people warm up to you, they’re actually some of the nicest and most genuine people in the world.
