In this article, I share my 14 days spending breakdown while travelling in Tanzania. My goal in this country was to see the lions which is the last of the big 5 animals in Africa I have yet to encounter. As well, I wanted to see the hyenas which has fascinated me since watching Lion King as a kid.

To no one’s surprise, travelling to Africa in general is really expensive. This is especially true if you want to go on a wildlife safari. Keep in mind that I already used travel hacking strategies already with my cheap $78.40 CAD flight from Poland to Tanzania. Imagine if you had to pay full price for your flight to any African destination. Those tickets would normally cost $2000 CAD on the low end and $3000 CAD is not unheard of.
Conclusion
Travelling to Africa is really expensive. I personally tried to pull all stops already by travel hacking my flights to save money on airfare. Also, I stayed in a hostel/guest house to reduce the cost of accommodation which is pricy in the African continent in general. Finally, I also booked my safari through my hostel which is cheaper than booking it ahead of time with any tour companies.
The only way I could have made this trip cheaper is if I travelled in a group of four in which case the hostel owner was willing to provide a discount of $80 USD for the 4 safari days. Regardless, I have no regrets as travelling to Tanzania was an amazing experience. I wouldn’t mind returning one day in the distant future to trek Mount Kilimanjaro and also to do a safari in Nyerere National Park to see the endangered wild dogs.
