My Africa travel game plan will be the most complicated compared to the other regions in the world. That’s because Africa is the continent with the most countries in the world. It’s also the continent that I have tons of countries left that I need to visit. Not to mention, many countries in Africa are difficult to visit because they are dangerous or it’s hard to acquire a visa.
Before continuing, make sure to read the Oceania article first to see my criteria for visiting every single country in the world.

My game plan To visit all 193 UN recognized countries series:
Countries I have not visited in Africa
North Africa travel game plan
Morocco and Tunisia will not be difficult to visit because it’s easy to enter those countries as Canadians. Algeria apparently has an annoying Visa process but definitely doable for Canadians wanting to visit this country.
Libya is probably the hardest country to visit in entire Africa. The country recently signed a ceasefire but we don’t know how long that will last. To make matters worst, they are not welcoming tourists at the moment. Those that visit this country have to get a business visa in order to visit it.
West Africa and Central Africa
- Burkina Faso
- Cape Verde
- Central African Republic
- Equatorial Guinea
- Ivory Coast
- Republic of Congo
- Sao Tome and Principe
- Sierra Leone
- The Gambia
West and Central Africa travel game plan
Hands down the region with the most countries I need to visit is West and Central Africa. Many countries in this region are also difficult to visit because of terrorism. However, I look forward to visiting many countries in this region as well. Mali has Timbuktu which is very high on my bucket list of travel destinations. Niger has Agadez and Zinder while Chad has Guelta d’Archei – all of which I truly want to see at some point in my life.
Equatorial Guinea has a difficult visa process but from my research, I heard that it’s best to acquire a visa to this place if I get it in Madrid, Spain.
Mauritania has the cool ore train ride that adventure travellers like myself will definitely not want to miss.
I plan on using a mix of my Aeroplan points and other credit cards like Aventura, HSBC, Avion, or Scotia AMEX to pay for flights that I cannot book using frequent flyer miles. Also, I wouldn’t object to travelling overland for the safer West African countries.
- South Sudan
East Africa travel game plan
On paper, East Africa shouldn’t be as difficult as West Africa to complete. However, this region of Africa has some difficult countries to visit. Somalia proper, for example, is very dangerous, and going to Somaliland (an autonomous region of Somalia) might be the safest course of action.
South Sudan is still undergoing conflict making travel here to be quite challenging. Eritrea is a country that is known to be difficult to visit because getting a visa here is hard. Next, Djibouti is very expensive and a quick visit might be the best thing to do.
Within the East African countries, I put Tanzania high on my list because I love animals and I want to explore the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Wildebeest migration. I also want to spend a good chunk of time exploring Ethiopia because I love landscapes and this country is rich in beautiful sceneries.
In all the regions in the world, the continent of Africa will be the most satisfying to complete. This continent has some of the most challenging countries to visit and has the most obstacles to overcome. Obstacles in this region include corrupt officials, criminals, terrorist, and cost which truly makes Africa the hardest continent to complete in this world.
