American Express Gold Card Review

In this blog post, I will be doing a complete American Express Gold Card review to see who is best suited to get this credit card in Canada. One of the reasons I am doing a review of this card is because it’s a solid second batch credit card to apply for after you’ve gone through all the no annual fee credit cards.

I have no affiliation with American Express or this credit card. Included in the article is my referral link for the AMEX Gold card.

When you apply for the American Express Gold Card through the AMEX website, they will give you 25,000 AMEX points after spending $1500 within 90 days. However, if you apply through someone else’s referral link, you can earn 30,000 AMEX points after spending $1500 within 90 days and also when you get a supplementary card for free. As you can see, playing the two-player game in this situation is best like referring your family, friends, or partner or spouse to earn that extra referral bonus points.

This card used to be one of the best credit cards to get until they implemented the annual fee for the first year. It’s probably to fend off people who abused signing up for this card repeatedly in the past. The once in a lifetime welcome bonus points seems to be heavily enforced nowadays and only a handful of people are still getting the points from repeated signup.

One way to offset the minimum spend is to apply using the CPA link if you work as a CPA.

Other perks for this card include:

  • Earn 2 points for every $1 spent on groceries, gas, drugstores, flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, and other eligible travel-related purchases
  • Earn 1 point for every $1 spent on everything else
  • Transfer your points to Aeroplan or Avios at a 1:1 ratio (25-30% more points when transferring your points to Avios during promotional periods
  • Earn 5000 points when you refer a family or friends to the AMEX Gold card
  • Out of province medical insurance for under 65 years old and 15 consecutive days from departure
  • Trip interruption insurance
  • Flight delay insurance
  • $500,000 travel accident insurance
  • Car rental theft and damage insurance
  • Lost or stolen baggage insurance
  • Hotel burglary insurance
  • Baggage delay insurance

As you can see the insurance coverage from the AMEX gold card is quite extensive. My favourite is car rental theft and damage insurance because it saves me money from paying for additional insurance when renting a car. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of AMEX insurance. From my experience, they make you jump through a lot of hoops just so they don’t pay you. I found it more reliable to get insurance from companies like World Nomads that actually payout without many problems.

Card eligibility

There’s no income requirement to apply for this credit card.

I used to love this credit card until AMEX made it so much harder to get this card again. If you’ve never gotten this credit card before, I think this is an amazing choice to apply for. I do think you should apply for credit cards with no annual fee for the first year first. That way, you can get those huge signup bonuses while saving money paying the annual fee. After you’re done with all those no annual fee credit cards for the first year, then this is great as the next set of credit cards to apply for.
