MBNA Best Western Mastercard Review

In this blog post, I will be doing a complete MBNA Best Western Mastercard review to see who is best suited to get this credit card in Canada. One of the reasons I am doing a review of this card is because I think the Best Western Mastercard is an underrated credit card to get for Canadians who love travelling.

I have no affiliation with MBNA or this credit card.

After your first purchase, you will earn 20,000 Best Western points. This is great because, for as little as 8,000 Best Western points, you can redeem it to stay for free at a Best Western property. However, MBNA does offer Best Western Mastercard promotions every 2-3 years. During those promotional periods, they typically give between 40,000-60,000 Best Western points.

In my opinion, it’s best to wait for a promotion before signing up for a Best Western credit card.

Other perks for this card include:

  • 5 Best Western points for every $1 spent on a Best Western property
  • 1 Alaska mile for every $1 spent on regular purchases
  • Gold Elite status after your first purchase
  • Diamond Elite status after spending $10,000 within one year of getting this credit card

Card eligibility

There are no income requirements to apply for this credit card.

Also, this credit card has no annual fee for the first year. And, if you apply through Great Canadian Rebates (my referral link), you can get $50 cashback.

I think the Best Western credit card is severely underrated. If you frequently travel, not all countries have Marriott or Hilton hotels. Those hotel chains are typically where Canadians can earn tons of points to redeem for a free hotel stay. For many cities with no Marriott or Hilton, there’s a good chance there’s a Best Western in that area.

For the sake of flexibility, having Best Western points handy really makes a big difference in helping you save money when you travel. Many Best Western properties are also quite nice (and some are not so nice). Especially if you stay in the right properties such as the Premier Collection.

I personally love Best Western and if you redeem it in Asia, they really give you a nice upgrade. When I went to Malaysia, they upgraded me to the Presidential Suite for having Platinum status. It was really awesome and have loved staying at a Best Western property since then.
