LATAM is one of my favourite airline carrier in South America. As a matter of fact, if you collect British Airways Avios, one of the best place to redeem those precious points is in South America via LATAM. Alas, all good things eventually come to an end. Since Delta purchased 20% of LATAM, the airline will be leaving the OneWorld Alliance.
LATAM is Leaving OneWorld Alliance
Since LATAM is leaving OneWorld, the ability to fly between South American cities using points and miles becomes increasingly limited.
As a Canadian, you would normally use your Avios and Aeroplan miles to fly between South American cities. LATAM will be leaving OneWorld by May 1, 2020, This gives you until April 30, 2020 to redeem your Avios before this happens.
LATAM Avios redemption sweet spots
If you are an adventure traveller Canadian, then you definitely don’t want to miss out on some of these sweet spots.
SCL-IPC (Santiago to Easter Island)
This coming April, I will be flying to Easter Island from Santiago, Chile. For 13,000 Avios, you can fly one way on Economy to Easter Island. Taxes comes to about roughly $10 per direction. This is significantly cheaper than the $300 you’d normally pay to fly one way to see the famous Moai statues.
Finding availability for this flight is difficult in Economy so you may have to fly in Business. The cost for business is 38,750 Avios. Another important thing to note is you normally need to search 330 days in advanced to find any availability.
GYE-GPS or UIO-GPS (Guayaquil to Galapagos or Quito to Galapagos)
This is one of those weird bookings where they force you to connect for no reason. If you start from Guayaquil, you need to connect to Quito before reaching Galapagos Island. If you start from Quito, then you need to connection from Guayaquil to reach Galapagos Island. The amount of Avios you need for this booking is 15,000 Avios. Again, if you are an adventure travelling Canadian, this sweet spot cannot be missed!
GRU-SLZ (Sao Paulo to Sao Luiz) to see Lençóis Maranhenses
For about 11,000 Avios, you can fly from Sao Paulo to Sao Luiz. Why would you want to do that? So you can see the severely underrated Lençóis Maranhenses!
Other sweet spots also includes:
- Santiago to Calama to check out the Atacama Desert for about 9,000 Avios
- Lima to Cusco to see Machu Picchu for about 6,000 Avios
- Sao Paulo to Iguazu Falls for about 6,000 Avios
Booking my Avios with LATAM will definitely be missed. It is hands down one of the best value for redeeming your Avios. Flights within South America are very expensive and redeeming your flights through LATAM helped alleviate this problem.
After LATAM leaves OneWorld, we’ll have to rely on Aeroplan’s partner, Avianca, to make future flight bookings within South America. I’ve personally made several bookings already before the changes happen. I hope you are able to make some redemptions as well.
