Are you aware of the latest changes to AMEX cards starting July 5, 2019? I took this screenshot from reddit to illustrate this latest doom and gloom in the points and miles world:
Latest changes to Amex cards
Basically, it appears that AMEX is cracking down on people who buys gift cards repeatedly in order to hit their minimum spend requirements or to manufacture spending to get tons of points.
After reading the statement above, I think the best course of action is to apply for the AMEX cards that you want to apply for right away. Then, from now until July 4, 2019, you do your best to hit your minimum spend requirements, even if that requires you to buy gift cards.
For those of you who uses manufactured spending methods, I would also recommend you continue doing so until July 5, 2019 when it might not be possible to do it anymore.
What to do after July 5, 2019
After July 5, 2019, you obviously don’t want to go hard with using gift cards anymore when using your American Express cards. I feel that you can still use it, just make sure you also use your card to make other purchases.
The people that this latest crackdown is targetting is obviously the ones who abuses the system really hard. If you’re not one of those people, then there’s nothing to worry about.
Just keep doing what you’re already doing and use gift cards here and there. If you have trouble hitting your minimum spend requirements on your new AMEX card, check out my article here to learn 45 ways to hit your minimum spend requirements.
As for me personally, I’ll probably apply for an AMEX card or two before July 5, 2019 but I’m not going to freak out over this. Everything will be fine!
