Would you like to learn how to get Marriott Hotel Gold status in Canada in just six stays?
Marriott Hotel has a “Taste of Gold” promotion that’s not listed on their website. The promotion is typically held between Jan. 5 to April 30th. During the promotion period, you will temporarily be given Gold Status.
In order to keep the Gold Status, you must complete SIX PAID stays before the end of April. A stay is one or more consecutive nights in a Marriott Hotel. For example, if you stay two days in a row in the same Marriott Hotel, that counts as ONE stay.
Upon completing the “Taste of Gold” challenge, your Gold Status will be extended for a rough total two years. For example, if I complete the challenge by the end of April, I will keep the Marriott Hotel Gold Status until January 31, 2018. That means I get to be Marriott Hotel Gold Status from January 5, 2016 until January 31, 2018!
How to Qualify for the Taste of Gold Challenge
In order to qualify for the “Taste of Gold” challenge, you must have Silver Status with Marriott. The best way to obtain Silver Status with Marriott is to get the Marriott Hotel VISA Credit Card. The Marriott Hotel VISA gives you automatic Silver Status, a welcome bonus of 50,000 points and one free night certificate. The first year annual fee will also be waived.
After getting the credit card and silver status, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and let them know that you have silver status. Having status with a competing hotel group will also help with having your request granted. In your email, make sure you request to do a status match or ask for the Taste of Gold promotion challenge.
The chances of you being granted the promotion is higher if you let them know your plans of staying at a Marriott Hotel in the coming future. At the end of the day, it’s all about the revenue gained and they will not say no to a paying customer. I am actually planning on staying in a Marriott Hotel for both Valentines day and my three year anniversary with my girlfriend making my request more authentic. I just communicated this to Marriott and of course they want to provide excellent customer service by helping me with my request.
One good strategy to meet this requirement is to find a city that has more than one Marriott Hotel. You would then need to do a “mattress run” which means you will purposely stay at hotels with the goal of qualifying for elite status. If the city has more than one Marriott, you will simply check in at one hotel and next day, check out and then check in at the other Marriott Hotel property.
Here’s an example:
In Bellingham WA, a city in the US that’s one hour drive from Vancouver, they have a Towneplace Suites and Springhill Suites that is right beside each other. This is a good opportunity to bounce between hotels to qualify for two stays towards elite status. What you would do is stay at Towneplace Suites for one nigh then, check out the next day and check in at Springhill Suites. Repeat this process until you have completed six stays in total.
Now keep in mind, the example above is just a sample of how you would approach Mattress Running. Your next goal is to Mattress Run at the lowest priced Marriott Hotel to maximize your savings. This is a little bit difficult for Canadians to do right now because of our weak dollar; however, all is not lost. You just need to be a little creative.
How to Find the Lowest Priced Marriott Hotel Property
If you want to do a Mattress Run in Canada, here are your cheapest options:
Looking at list of Marriott properties above, you can tell it is not very cheap to Mattress run in Canada. It is still worth obtaining Gold Status because for the next two years, you will have the ability to status match with competing hotel properties.
Another option is doing a mattress run down the United States. Lets say the Canadian dollar rebounds and becomes close to par with the USD once again, going to Dallas Texas to do a Mattress run might be your best option:
As you can see, the Marriott properties in the Dallas, Texas area is much cheaper than what we have here in Canada. I have checked other American Marriott properties and while it is possible to get cheaper nights somewhere else, it is not as efficient as doing the mattress run in Dallas, Texas.
Now, if you really want to save tons of money doing mattress runs, plan a vacation to South Africa and stay at their Protea Marriott Hotel properties:
Wow look at that, the average cost per night is roughly $50! If you split the cost with friends, spouse or partner, that’s literally $25 a night! That’s even cheaper than staying at a hostel. Amazing.
On a side note, if you want to go for Platinum Status, it would be a good idea to stay in South Africa for awhile and mattress run 55 nights. (20 nights are given for free as bonus from the Marriott Hotel VISA card.
There you go! Enjoy your Gold Status and let me know how it works out for you. If you have any questions, feel free to reply to this post or email me at email@example.com
