Hi everyone, here is my current update in regards to traveling the world for one year:
- I currently have 344,000 Aeroplan Points. Enough to travel around the globe one and a half times.
- I currently have 50,000 Alaska Airline Points.
- I currently have 50,000 Marriott Hotel Points (I plan on using these in Africa)
- I currently have 20,000 Starwood Hotel Points (I plan on saving these for travel hacking to either Bora Bora or Maldives)
I just received the Starwood Business American Express. After I meet the requirements for that card, I will have officially tapped out all of the current available travel points that is worth pursuing in Canada.
I am also saving up $15,000 towards my one year trip. So far, progress is slow because I have been investing my money towards my blog and internet marketing.
My other goal is to earn a minimum of $1,000 per month from my blog/online business/freelancing by July of 2016. I’m hoping that all my investments towards my online gigs will pay off down the road and help fund my travels.
My major concern right now is leaving for my trip in August. I wanted to go to Europe first but there is a possibility that it will hurt me financially down the road. Europe is by far the most expensive continent compared to Africa, Asia and South America (with the exception of Australia/New Zealand). Since one of my major goal is to build up this blog’s content, I figure it would be wise to go to Africa first, followed by Asia then South America. That way, I can hit more countries before my funds run out (assuming I’m not earning income by then) and generate tons of content for this blog.
In the worst case scenario, I will run out of money by the time I finish with South America allowing me to visit Europe for only a brief period of time. I’m hoping that will not be the case.
I’m gambling right now that my online business or freelancing will take off and generate enough income to support my travel next year.
My game plan in regards to how I will utilize my points is as follows:
Fly to Africa on business class from North America – 45,000-60,000 Aeroplan Points
Fly from Africa to Asia on business class – 45,000-60,000 Aeroplan Points
Mini RTW in Asia/Australia/New Zealand. (I briefly covered this topic in Meetup #4, you can watch the video when you signup to my mailing list) – 40,000-50,000 Aeroplan Points
Fly from Asia to South America – 40,000-50,000 points (not sure if I will take business class, most likely not)
Fly from South America to Europe – 50,000 points
Total estimated points used: 260,000-300,000 points
